Introduced to the island in 1736, the coffee production in Puerto Rico began to have a gradual expansion from the mid-nineteenth century. However, it was in the 1870s when it undertook an accelerated production and a global sales increase.

The coffee plantations dominated agricultural landscapes of the mountainous interior and Puerto Rican exports. Coffee became the leading product of the island's economy, overtaking the sugar cane. Already in 1886 accounted for 49% of the value of total exports of the island.
